TennisSection previews the Tokyo 2020 Olympics as Elina Svitolina takes on Ajla Tomljanovic in the Round of 32 on Monday, July 26th, 2021.
Will Ajla Tomljanovic continue to build on the momentum she gained at Wimbledon earlier this month and in her first round win here in Tokyo by causing the upset? Will Elina Svitolina find her form so short after returning to the tour after her wedding the Gael Monfils? Both players can win this match if they are at their absolute best, but only one will make their way to the Round of 16 at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Who will it be?
Ajla Tomljanovic came through a tight match in the first round, beating the Kazakh, Yaroslava Shvedova in 1 set and a half 7-5/3-2 before Yaroslava had to retire with an injury. Ajla Tomljanovic has been finding her form later in her career than she would have expected and she is definitely happy with her recent performances at Wimbledon. Ajla will know that it is going to be good if she can continue playing with this form throughout the remainder of the season because it sets her up perfectly to rise up the rankings and find easier draws going into tournaments. However, with a very tough opponent in Elina Svitolina next, can she cause the upset here in Tokyo?
Elina Svitolina had to fight right until the end against Laura Siegemund in the first round, beating the German in 3 sets 6-3/5-7/6-4. Elina Svitolina recently got married to Gael Monfils just last week and they are already in Tokyo aiming to make it far. However, she has already started off quite poorly and she has not been performing up to her standard all throughout 2021. Elina will want to best prepare herself for the hard court season where she knows she can play her best, but she needs to get something going out of nothing at the moment. With her being coachless here at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics due to restrictions, can Elina beat the in form Ajla Tomljanovic?
Elina Svitolina and Ajla Tomljanovic have met 3 times before, with Elina Svitolina leading the head to head 3-0. Although the head to head is very one-sided, they have not met in 3 years. This year, Ajla has clearly been the superior player and I think the circumstances which Elina is currently in, coachless due to travel restrictions and also just got married, do not put her in the best state to be at her best. Ajla is fully focused on the tasks at hand here at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and I see her coming out here to cause the upset and get herself into the Round of 16 with the amazing form she has had over the last month.
