TennisSection previews the 2021 Eastbourne Open as Alex de Minaur (2) meets Vasek Pospisil in the Quarter-finals on Thursday, June 24th 2021.
Will the big swinging and experienced Vasek Pospisil come out on top here to show us his best tennis since the end of last year? Will Alex de Minaur get closer to the final as he looks to get his second title of the season? Both players can win this match if they are on top of their game, but only one will make their way to the Semi-finals of the 2021 Eastbourne Open. Who will it be?
Vasek Pospisil did not really have to play too much in his Round of 16 match against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, winning the opening set 7-6 before Alejandro had to retire with an injury. Vasek Pospisil is a strong player on these lower bouncing conditions and faster courts as his huge serve is able to catch his opponents off guard, and his forehand is also very hard to return. However, the one thing which has been lacking from his strong game is consistency. If Vasek Pospisil had the stamina and consistency to play week in and week out at a high level, he would have had a much more successful career, and he will now have to be ready for a battle against the always tough Alex de Minaur.
Alex de Minaur beat the local wildcard, Liam Broady, in the Round of 16 in straight sets 6-3/6-4. Alex de Minaur is so hard to beat when he is in form, and he has been in form since the beginning of last week. Looking at this draw, Alex will know that he has a strong chance to make his way to the Final of the Viking International and give himself a chance at his second title of the year. However, he will need to ensure his return game is at its best now as he meets the hard hitting Vasek Pospisil who will try and give it his best in this match.
Alex de Minaur and Vasek Pospisil have met 3 times before, with Alex de Minaur leading the head to head 3-0. The last time they met was at the 2020 US Open where Alex won in straight sets 7-6/6-3/6-2. That tournament was one of Vasek’s best tournament in a while, and nonetheless, Alex de Minaur was able to beat him easily. Unfortunately for Vasek, I don’t see him winning this match. Vasek is just inconsistent and his full focus is not on tennis, with him mainly focusing on his tennis association. Alex will be more determined coming into this match to get one step closer to the title. Alex will make his way to the Semi-finals of the 2021 Eastbourne Open.
