Paris Masters 2021: Stefanos Tsitsipas vs. Alexei Popyrin Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2021 Paris Masters as Stefanos Tsitsipas takes on Alexei Popyrin in the Round of 32 on Wednesday, November 3rd, 2021.

Will Stefanos Tsitsipas win? Will Alexei Popyrin cause an upset? This will be the first career meeting between the Greek and the Aussie and it sure promises to be a cracker at the 2021 Paris Masters.

It has been a bittersweet 2021 season for Stefanos Tsitsipas on so many levels. Here is the good part. He began the year in blistering form, reaching the last four at the Australian Open. That run included a sensational comeback win from two sets down against Rafael Nadal in the quarterfinals. Tsitsipas clinched his first Masters 1000 title in Monte Carlo and would fill his trophy cabinet with the Lyon crown just a few weeks later. His biggest moment yet came at Roland Garros where he reached his first Grand Slam final. And then the bad part happened. He let slip a two-set lead against Novak Djokovic and lost in five. That defeat stung so hard that Tsitsipas didn’t recover in time at Wimbledon. The Greek has been on the receiving end of some heartbreaking defeats in the second half of the campaign. Can he rediscover his winning touch at the Paris Masters when he takes on Alexei Popyrin?

Alexei Popyrin has taken his second chance with aplomb at the 2021 Paris Masters. Popyrin can count himself lucky for reaching the main draw after falling to Tommy Paul in the second round of qualifying over the weekend. But he was instilled as a lucky loser and drew his compatriot Alex De Minaur right from the gate. And Popyrin, with a second bite at the cherry, gave De Minaur another acrimonious early exit. If he doesn’t play Stockholm next week, it will be four wins in six months for De Minaur – quite a jaw dropping stat in comparison to his outstanding first half of the campaign.

Stefanos Tsitsipas will play Alexei Popyrin for the first time on the ATP Tour. The Greek will naturally come in as the overwhelming favorite to roll into the third round of the Paris Masters. He will be the more aggressive of the two players and will look to open up the court with his powerful and precise forehand. Popyrin’s chances of causing an upset might linger slightly on Tsitsipas’ overall mood and partly with his own style of play. The latter might come to fruition but not to an extent of troubling the Greek for large patches in the match. Pound for pound, Popyrin might match the Greek’s serving numbers, but overall Tsitsipas is the more complete player.
