Kremlin Cup 2021: Aslan Karatsev vs. Gilles Simon Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2021 Kremlin Cup as Aslan Karatsev takes on Gilles Simon in the quarterfinals on Friday, October 22nd, 2021.

Will Aslan Karatsev move on? Will Gilles Simon pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have the current favorite for the title taking on a tough test. Who will move on to the semifinals at the 2021 Kremlin Cup?

Aslan Karatsev got a solid win to set up this tougher matchup with Gilles Simon, it won’t be easy for the Russian to storm past him. Simon plays a pretty conservative style, trying to elongate the rallies and get his opponent to miss. Against Karatsev, that’s not a bad strategy, as he is known to make many enforced errors, however, Karatsev is simply in much better form than Simon, and has a much higher ranking for a reason. Karatsev hasn’t been too consistent since being one of the best players of the year in the first half of it, so Simon can definitely push him as the two fight for a spot in the semifinals at the 2021 Kremlin Cup.

Gilles Simon got a great win over McDonald to set up this very tough meeting against Aslan Karatsev. In order to take him down, he will have to try and adjust his game to be more aggressive. He was able to do that against McDonald, but definitely not to the extreme that he would have to take it to against Karatsev. I don’t think Simon has it in him to stay in the rallies for too long, and he’s hardly been playing this year at all, so he will have to play some out of the box stuff in order to take on Karatsev and fight for a spot in the semifinals at the 2021 Astana Open.

Aslan Karatsev and Gilles Simon have never before, with this being their first career meeting. It’s a pretty interesting matchup, with a very aggressive player vs a more conservative player. On a court like this, I feel like Karatsev will have the edge for sure, his balls bounce low off the ground and jump into your legs, while Simon hits a little slower and still flat, making it hard for him to deal with those. I think it’ll be a tight matchup, as Simon has the ability to make him miss, but Karatsev will likely take over the important moments of the match and get the win to book his spot in the semifinals at the 2021 Kremlin Cup.
