TennisSection previews the 2021 Munich Open as Alexander Zverev (1) meets Ricardas Berankis in the Round of 16 on Wednesday April 28th, 2021.
Local hero Alexander Zverev is the number one seed here at the 2021 Munich Open and will face lucky loser Ricardas Berankis in the Round of 16. While there is a big gulf in rankings, this is a tricky opening encounter for the German and he cannot take his opponent for granted. Can the Latvian cause the shocking upset and get the win here in Bavaria?
Alexander Zverev is the top seed here in Munich and is currently ranked #6 in the ATP world rankings. The German star has had a mixed season so far in 2021, winning the title in Acapulco and starting the year in top form. However he has had some very disappointing results since then, and will be eager to get his season back on track with a strong showing here at the 2021 Munich Open. He is a two-time winner of this event and this seems like the perfect platform for him to regroup and get back into form. While he is much better known for his hard court prowess, he is a very capable clay court player and has multiple titles to his name. His aggressive baseline style is very effective on this surface and he enters the match against Ricardas Berankis as the overwhelming favorite.
Ricardas Berankis is the Latvian #1 and is currently ranked #89 in the ATP world rankings. A former junior world number one, he has seen his ranking decline over the past few years and is hoping to get back on track. After losing in the Qualifying Rounds to Ilya Ivashka, he was handed a lifeline and a lucky loser berth in the Main Draw at the 2021 Munich Open. He was very impressive in his First Round win over Maximillian Marterer, defeating the German in two straight sets with some controlled tennis. Like his opponent Alexander Zverev, Berankis has been in poor form and will be happy to have gotten the First Round win. However, he now faces a huge challenge against the number one seed, and will have to be at his absolute best to make this competitive.
This will be the second time that the two players are facing each other on the ATP Tour, with Zverev leading the head to head series 1-0. The last time they met was in 2018 at Roland Garros, with the German winning in straight sets, losing only 4 games. Despite Zverev’s struggles this year, I see him winning this one quite comfortably. He has much more firepower than his opponent Ricardas Berankis and should be able to overpower the Latvian. Expect Alexander Zverev to win this match in straight sets, advancing to yet another Quarter-Final here at the 2021 Munich Open.
