Australian Open 2022: Pablo Carreno Busta vs. Tallon Griekspoor Tennis Pick and Prediction

Australian Open 2022: Pablo Carreno Busta vs. Tallon Griekspoor Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2022 Australian Open as Pablo Carreno Busta takes on Tallon Griekspoor in the second round on Wednesday, January 19th, 2022.

Will Pablo Carreno Busta reach the third round of the Australian Open for the sixth straight year? Or will Tallon Griekspoor prove his win over Fabio Fognini in the first round was no fluke? Regardless, this is a stern test for the higher-ranked Spaniard who is coming up against the top-performing Challenger Tour player in 2021.

Pablo Carreno Busta produced a dominant display to defeat Argentinean qualifier Tomas Martin Etcheverry. The 22-year-old from La Plata was appearing in the main draw of a Grand Slam for the first time at the Australian Open and he seemed overawed by the occasion. Carreno Busta was part of the Spanish team contingent that reached the ATP Cup final for the second time in three years, but could not prevent defeat to Canada in the championship tie. However, the 30-year-old improved to 5-1 to start the year as he broke Etcheverry five times from eight opportunities. He will face the World No. 62 Tallon Griekspoor at the Australian Open.

Tallon Griekspoor, meanwhile, recovered from the injury that kept him out from competing in the quarterfinal of the Melbourne Summer Set against Nadal a couple of weeks ago. He recorded an upset win over World No. 32 Fabio Fognini in the first round of the Australian Open. The Dutchman was the ATP Challenger Tour’s MVP last season winning a record-breaking eight titles. And he is seamlessly transitioning to the senior tour, as he currently sits at career-high ranking of No. 62.

Pablo Carreno Busta has not played Tallon Griekspoor before their scheduled meeting at the Australian Open. Griekspoor launched his Australian Open campaign in style, and the noises from some pundits and gnarled tennis fans is that he could very well be the next Aslan Karatsev. While you could make a case for an upset in this one, I think Carreno Busta’s versatility will be the difference.
