TennisSection previews the 2021 Indian Wells Open as Gael Monfils takes on Kevin Anderson in the Round of 32 on Tuesday, October 12th, 2021.
Will Gael Monfils move on? Will Kevin Anderson pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have a matchup of two veterans coming to a clash. Who will move onto the Round of 16 at the 2021 Indian Wells Open?
Gael Monfils got a solid win to kick off his campaign at the 2021 Indian Wells Open and to set up this meeting with Kevin Anderson. While Monfils is definitely the favorite to get through, Anderson is serving incredibly well and won’t make it easy for him. Monfils will just have to try and get as many serves back as possible, while making sure he doesn’t drop serve himself. Even if he can’t break Anderson, which is rather unlikely in the whole course of a best of 3 match, I expect him to get through the tiebreaks, as his level is just higher at the moment, and if he can stay firm on serve, I expect some opportunities to come naturally to him on return as the match progresses. I do think Monfils will edge it out in a tough one to move on to the Round of 16 at the 2021 Indian Wells Open.
Kevin Anderson got a great win to set up this meeting with Gael Monfils, upsetting Lorenzo Sonego in two tiebreaks. Anderson served too well to give him any opportunities, and played some brilliant tiebreakers. He will have to do the same thing if he wants to take on Monfils, and he does have a shot. However, Monfils is a much better returner than Sonego, so I feel like Monfils can actually get in on more points and take advantage of more opportunities than Sonego could. Anderson has a shot here, but it will be tough, even if he doesn’t win, I still think he will push Monfils to the limit as he fights to move on here at the 2021 Indian Wells Open.
Gael Monfils and Kevin Anderson have met six times before, with Gael Monfils leading the head to head 5-1. Monfils really has dominated Anderson in the course of their careers, the only time Anderson won was in their most recent meeting when Anderson was playing the tennis of his life in Wimbledon 2018, and he still needed 3 of those sets that he won to be tiebreaks. Now that they are both in the twilight of their careers, I expect the result to be something similar to what has occurred throughout most of it, with Monfils holding the decisive edge on hard courts and clay courts. Keep in mind that Indian Wells is playing very slow this year, so Monfils is definitely the favorite to take it, but it could still be a tough one for him, and I don’t expect him to go through to the Round of 16 at the 2021 Indian Wells Open without a fight.
