John Isner put on a great performance in the Quarter-Final, beating the always tough and definitely improving Gael Monfils in straight sets 7-6/6-4. John has had a great week this week, beating three young players who are definitely threats, such as Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, Cristian Garin, and Andrey Rublev. John Isner is showing us why he is such a threat when the North American hard court swing comes around as he is able to play very well in these hot conditions with his serve flying through the court. Now, Isner will have to be at his best level and more if he wants to make it to the Final of the 2021 Toronto Open by beating Daniil Medvedev.
Daniil Medvedev had to fight through an extremely tough match against Hubert Hurkacz in the Quarter-Finals, beating the Pole in 3 sets 2-6/7-6/7-6. This match was so vital for Medvedev to win because when they met before in Wimbledon, Hurkacz won in 5 sets coming back from 2-1 sets down. Medvedev showed amazing fight and composure, especially in the tiebreaks where sometimes he has let his guard down in the past. Medvedev will want to build on that win and he will know that if he can beat an in form Hubert Hurkacz, he can definitely have a strong chance here against John Isner at the 2021 Toronto Open.
Daniil Medvedev and John Isner have met 1 time before, with Daniil Medvedev leading the head to head 1-0. Medvedev beat Isner in straight sets at the ATP Cup last year, and I see this match being somewhat similar. Of course John Isner has been in great form this week, but this is now a huge step up in competition as he meets Medvedev. Medvedev has as big of a serve in terms of speed to Isner, so he will not have any issues in holding his serve. Adding to this, Medvedev is probably the second best returner on the ATP Tour behind Novak Djokovic. Medvedev will be able to hold serve comfortably and then use his amazing return to wear the American down. Medvedev will get himself into another Final as he aims to win another Masters 1000 title and his 3rd title of 2021 at the 2021 Toronto Open.
