A titanic battle awaits us in the Round of 16 at the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters event in Monaco. Fourth seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece will face sixteenth seed Chilean Cristian Garin in a match that tennis fans will not want to miss. The last time these two played each other it was a very close and intense match and we are expecting nothing different here. Which one of the young stars will come out on top?
Stefanos Tsitsipas is currently ranked #5 in the world and has firmly established himself as one of the top players in the world. He has been having a fantastic year so far, consistently going deep in tournaments but has not been able to claim a title yet. The Greek star is a very competent clay court player, and is considered one of the favorites for the title here at the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters. Tsitsipas was impressive in his Second Round win over Aslan Karatsev, defeating the in-form Russian in straight sets, dominating from the baseline and serving extremely well. He enters this match as the slight favorite over Cristian Garin, but knows that this will be an extremely tough encounter against one of the top clay court players in the world.
Cristian Garin is currently ranked #24 in the ATP world rankings and is considered one of the top talents on the tour. The holder of five ATP clay court titles, Garin is considered a dark horse contender for the title here at the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters. The Chilean has been in mixed form this year, and will be hoping for a deep run here in Monaco as he attempts to break into the top 20 in the world. He has a huge baseline game and is an elite mover on this surface, and is truly capable of troubling the big names here. While he enters this match as the underdog, he has built some serious momentum here with impressive wins over Felix Auger-Aliassime and John Millman. He dominated before narrowly losing in three sets when they played last year, and will be backing himself here.
The two players have faced each other once before on the ATP Tour, with Stefanos Tsitsipas leading the head to head series 1-0. They played last year in Hamburg, and the Greek star came away with the 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 victory in a match that lasted almost three hours. There is serious upset potential here, as Cristian Garin is an extremely strong clay court player and is playing with some huge confidence here. With that being said, I am still backing Tsitsipas to win here at the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters. He has matured greatly as a player and is playing with tremendous focus. I believe that it will go the distance, but with that mental edge, the Greek star will eventually come out on top.
