TennisSection previews the 2021 Indian Wells Open as Cameron Norrie (21) meets Tommy Paul in the Round of 16 on Wednesday October 13th, 2021.
Can Tommy Paul continue his run here at the 2021 Indian Wells Open by defeating yet another seed? The American delighted the home crowd with his huge upset win over Andrey Rublev in the previous round, and will be hoping to reach his first Masters-1000 Quarter-Final. Next up he will face Cameron Norrie who is having a breakout season this year. This seems to be very evenly matched, who will get the win here?
Cameron Norrie is the 21st seed here at the 2021 Indian Wells Open and is ranked at a career-high #26 on the ATP Tour. The British #2 has been having an outstanding season so far, winning his first ever title at the Los Cabos Open. He has been inconsistent lately, with a three match losing streak followed by a run to the Final in San Diego last week. More consistency will be needed in his results if he is to break into the top 20 and he will be hoping for a deep run here in Indian Wells. He has started strongly here, defeating ATP Tour veterans Tennys Sandgren and Roberto Bautista Agut both in three sets but knows that he will have to be at his best against the surging Tommy Paul who has been on fire this week.
Tommy Paul had never been past the Second Round at a Masters-1000 event before, but has played some fantastic tennis to reach this stage. The world number 60 has not had the best of years, but has found form at the right time, seemingly pulling inspiration from the home crowd. Solid wins over Feliciano Lopez and Dusan Lajovic were followed by a shocking three set upset over world number five Andrey Rublev, and the American’s confidence will be at an all-time high. He controlled the match from the baseline, never allowing the aggressive Russian to take control of the match. While he is the underdog here, he will be very difficult to beat in these conditions and will be backing himself to get the win here at the 2021 Indian Wells Open.
This is the second meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour with the American winning the only time that they played, earlier this year in Melbourne. Despite the gap in rankings, This match seems evenly poised with Tommy Paul on a high after the biggest win of his career. Cameron Norrie is a very steady player with no real weapons, so if the American is able to keep his errors low he may be able to overpower him and has an outside chance of winning here. With that being said, I do think that Cameron Norrie will be able to grind out a very tough win here. He has made nine Quarter-Finals this year and has really matured as a player, and I expect that to be the difference. Norrie should win in three sets here, advancing to the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 Indian Wells Open.
