TennisSection previews the 2021 Indian Wells Open as Matteo Berrettini takes on Taylor Fritz in the Round of 32 on Tuesday, October 12th, 2021.
Will Matteo Berrettini move on? Will Taylor Fritz pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have a tight matchup to decide who goes through. Who will move onto the Round of 16 at the 2021 Indian Wells Open?
Matteo Berrettini got an alright win, winning in a tight two sets against a lower ranked player. His level of play wasn’t too promising to make him a top contender at the tournament, however, he still does hold the advantage over Taylor Fritz, being ranked much higher and having much more consistent results. Berrettini can be inconsistent in the way that he plays, but he does have the ranking that he has due to his huge serving, and still being able to stay in rallies and occasionally power his forehand down the court. I expect a close one, as he isn’t in too good of a form right now, but I think Berrettini will get it together and edge it out over Fritz and go through to the next round here at the 2021 Indian Wells Open.
Taylor Fritz got a solid win over Nakashima, who has been playing some good tennis. To take him out in straight sets was a great win, showing that he’s ready to compete against Matteo Berrettini and make sure he doesn’t go down without a fight. In order to take out Berrettini, I think his main goal should be to just target his backhand over and over again. If he is able to just pepper his backhand, which is by far the weakest in the top 30, then I think he can pull out the win. But it will be tough, seeing as how good and consistent of results Berrettini has had this year, particularly at slams. However, Berrettini’s game can falter, and if Fritz can take advantage of that then maybe he can come out on top in a tight one to move on to the Round of 16 at the 2021 Indian Wells Open.
Matteo Berrettini and Taylor Fritz have met once before, with Taylor Fritz leading the head to head 1-0. Their one meeting came at the 2019 Davis Cup, with Fritz winning in 3 sets in an indoor hard court. Neither player was nearly as advanced as they are today, and the court speed is much different. I think the fact that the court is playing so slow this year, it gives Berrettini the advantage for sure. Fritz would stand a better chance on fast courts, as I feel like he is a good matchup for Berrettini, however, Berrettini will have a lot of time and because of that, Fritz is in trouble here. I expect Berrettini to turn up his level in the big moments and take advantage of the slow conditions to take out Fritz and move through to the Round of 16 here at the 2021 Indian Wells Open.
