TennisSection previews the Tokyo 2020 Olympics as Hubert Hurkacz takes on Marton Fucsovics in the Round of 64 on Sunday, July 25th, 2021.
Will Marton Fucsovics pull off another big upset? Will Hubert Hurkacz back up his Wimbledon results with a good win? Saturday’s contest will be one to watch, where I suspect we will see a pretty close match. Who will move on to the Round of 32 at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics?
Hubert Hurkacz is coming into this tournament with a lot of confidence, having just reached the semifinals of Wimbledon, defeating Daniil Medvedev and Roger Federer. While those opponents perhaps were not at their best level, it still should give him plenty of confidence mentally and in his game, that he can make good runs everywhere, not just the grass. He has a big serve and consistent groundstrokes, and if he’s able to play aggressively, then he becomes a very dangerous opponent. His opponent in Marton Fucsovics has a very well-rounded game, and I suspect there could be trouble for him, as Marton has been making waves in the tour as well, as recently as Wimbledon much like himself. He’ll need to play a steady game, occasionally going big with his flat groundstrokes, sweeping Marton off the court here at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Marton Fucsovics is coming into this matchup with not a ton of confidence, considering his opponent is playing great tennis, and his ranking shows it. However, if Fucsovics were to pull this off, it certainly wouldn’t be the biggest upset that could happen in this tournament, but still, his chances of winning are not as high as he would hope. Hurkacz is not the best mover, considering he’s a big guy and relies mostly on his base game, so if Fucsovics can play super aggressive, and try to make Hurkacz move a lot more than he wants to, then he can pull off the win. It’s definitely easier said than done though, and Hubert will put lots of pressure on him with his big service and big hitting.
Hubert Hurkacz and Marton Fucsovics have played once before, with Marton Fucsovics leading the head to head 1-0. Their one meeting came three years ago, when neither player was too known, and since the match result was close, we shouldn’t take a lot away from that match. However, it does show Fucsovics is not hopeless here, he has a chance to take it, and he’ll need to take advantage of Hurkacz’s speed, and move him side to side as much as possible, but he’ll also have to play aggressively on the second serves, because Hubert serves huge, so he won’t be able to get into a lot of points on his return games if Hurkacz’s first serve percentage is high. Overall, it should be a really fun match, I expect it to be a close one, let’s see who will move on to the Round of 32 at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
