TennisSection previews the 2021 French Open as Stefanos Tsitsipas (5) meets Jeremy Chardy in the First Round on Sunday May 30th, 2021.
Will the red-hot Stefanos Tsitsipas continue his amazing year in 2021 with a dominant performance at Roland Garros? Or can veteran hometown hero Jeremy Chardy cause the stunning upset here at the 2021 French Open? The Greek star is heavily favored on paper, but the Frenchman may have a trick or two up his sleeve. Who will advance to the Second Round here in Paris?
Stefanos Tsitsipas is currently ranked #5 in the ATP world rankings and is the fifth seed here at the 2021 French Open. The Greek superstar has firmly established himself as one of the best players in the world this year, and should be considered a major contender for the title at Roland Garros. After claiming his maiden Masters-1000 Title in Monte-Carlo he followed it up with the title in Lyon, and has been extremely consistent this season. He enters Roland Garros 2021 as possibly the most in-form player in the world and is someone that all the other top players will be eager to avoid. While he enters this match against Jeremy Chardy as the heavy favorite, he would be wise to not underestimate his veteran opponent, who is playing at home with nothing to lose, and is highly experienced.
Jeremy Chardy is a veteran of the ATP Tour, and currently finds himself ranked at #58 in the world rankings. Now 34 years of age, he is approaching the twilight of his career, but remains a dangerous opponent. The Frenchman doesn’t quite have the power and movement that he once did, but is a highly intelligent player, capable of outstanding tennis on occasion. He has been having a mixed 2021 season, with some strong performances in doubles, but inconsistent results in singles. Chardy will be hoping to put on a show for home fans here at the 2021 French Open, and will be highly motivated here. Unfortunately he is up against one of the best players in the world in Stefanos Tsitsipas, and his stay at Roland Garros is expected to be short lived.
This will be the fourth time that the two players have faced each other on the ATP Tour, and Stefanos Tsitsipas leads the head to head 2-1. They have never played on clay before, with the pair having a hard court win each and the Greek winning on Grass. This is a relatively straightforward match to call, and will be an easy win for Stefanos Tsitsipas. While Jeremy Chardy is still a solid player, he is not on the same planet as Tsitsipas, who is one of the main contenders for the title here at the 2021 French Open. The young superstar has way too much firepower for the veteran, and will win easily, advancing to the Second Round here at Roland Garros.
