TennisSection previews the 2021 Washington Open as Jannik Sinner (5) meets Steve Johnson in the Quarter-Finals on Friday August 6th, 2021.
Fifth seeded Italian Jannik Sinner will face unseeded American Steve Johnson for a spot in the Semi-Finals here at the 2021 Washington Open. The young phenom is seeking his second title of the year, but entered this event with some poor recent results and will be delighted to find some form here. He next faces Steve Johnson, can the veteran American cause the big upset and advance to his first ATP Semi-Final in a long time?
Jannik Sinner is the fifth seed here at the 2021 Washington Open and is currently ranked #24 in the ATP world rankings. The Italian teenager is the most exciting and promising youngster in world tennis, and he has taken huge strides over the past few seasons to truly establish himself on the ATP Tour. Already the winner of two ATP titles, he has also reached his first Masters-1000 Final in Miami this year and is the favorite for this event after the top seeds were eliminated. After entering this event on a three match losing streak he has found form at the right time, defeating Emil Ruusuvuori and Sebastian Korda en route to the Quarter-Finals where he will take on the American Steve Johnson. The Italian has been serving extremely well and hitting with confidence, so he will be very difficult to beat here.
Steve Johnson is unseeded here at the 2021 Washington Open and is ranked #81 on the ATP Tour. The American was once ranked inside the top 20 but has struggled with form and injures over the past few seasons which has seen his ranking slide. While he is not the player that he once was, his experience makes him a tricky opponent, plus the fact that he is playing at home. After an upset win over third seeded Alex De Minaur in the Second Round he demolished Ricardas Beraniks in a scintillating performance. Now that he has his confidence back he will be a very tough opponent and should not be underestimated here.
This will be the second meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, with the Italian winning their only previous match two years ago. Their careers have gone in drastically different directions since then, with Steve Johnson sliding in the rankings and Sinner becoming a force in world tennis. Despite Johnson being in great form, I think his run here at the 2021 Washington Open will come to an end. He simply cannot withstand the immense firepower that Jannik Sinner possesses, and will struggle mightily here. The American may put up some brief resistance early on, but expect the Italian to cruise to victory here in straight sets, advancing to the Final here in at the 2021 Citi Open.
