TennisSection previews the 2021 Indian Wells Open as Frances Tiafoe takes on Benoit Paire in the Round of 128 on Thursday, October 7th, 2021.
Will Frances Tiafoe move on? Will Benoit Paire pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have a tight matchup with two of the most fascinating players on the ATP Tour. Who will win move on to the Round of 64 at the 2021 Indian Wells Open?
Frances Tiafoe has been playing great tennis, after a tough loss to FAA in the fourth round of the US Open, he’s taken a little break from playing, waiting until this tournament to come back. He has a tough one to get through in the first round in Benoit Paire. Paire is a player who can have one of the highest or lowest levels on the ATP Tour. I suspect that Paire’s mental affairs are mostly in order at this point, and I do expect him to play good tennis. At their best so far at this point in their careers, I think Paire would definitely win, however, he is not at his best and Tiafoe has been playing some great, power tennis with awesome aggression. Let’s see if he can carry on that momentum to take out Paire and head through here at the 2021 Indian Wells Open.
Benoit Paire has had an interesting year to say the least. He was practically tanking his matches for the first half of it, only starting to straighten himself out at the start of the NA hard court swing. Once he did that though, he beat some great players and was able to use that very versatile and aggressive game to the fullest. Really hitting through his groundstrokes and serving great. It’ll be a tough one against Tiafoe, who had a great US Open and is definitely much more consistent than Paire is. Tiafoe can really rip the ball, and Benoit struggles with pace to his forehand, which is obviously his weaker side. It’ll be an interesting one, let’s see if Paire can push Tiafoe for a spot in the Round of 64 at the 2021 Indian Wells Open.
Frances Tiafoe and Benoit Paire have met once before, with Frances Tiafoe leading the head to head 1-0. Their one meeting came at the 2017 Shanghai Masters, with Tiafoe winning 6-4 6-4. If Tiafoe could win in straight sets then, I have little doubt that he won’t be able to repeat a similar feat in this match. Tiafoe is a pretty good matchup for Paire, and while Paire absolutely has the level to take him out, I don’t think he’ll be able to bring it against the youngster, and I fully expect Tiafoe to show his level and progress to the next round at the 2021 Indian Wells Open.
