Dubai Open 2021: Jannik Sinner vs. Aslan Karatsev Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2021 Dubai Open as Jannik Sinner (16) meets Aslan Karatsev in the Quarter-finals on Thursday, March 18th, 2021.

Will Aslan Karatsev continue to make his name even more known throughout the tennis world since he broke through to the Semi-finals of the 2021 Australian Open? Will Jannik Sinner continue to put on great composed performances against some of the most in form players on the ATP Tour at the moment? Both players have been playing some great tennis here at the Dubai Open, but only one will make their way to the Semi-finals. Who will it be?

Jannik Sinner put on a superb performance in the Third Round, beating the No.4 seed, Roberto Bautista Agut. Sinner started the match incredibly well, winning the first set quite quickly 6-4. In the second set, the momentum left, as Roberto Bautista Agut was able to outwear the young Italian, and winning the set 6-3. However, in the third set, Jannik Sinner was able to remain composed during the extremely tight points which could’ve given Roberto Bautista Agut the win, and he eventually won it 7-5. Sinner has now played 2 3-set matches in a row, but this one against Roberto Bautista Agut was both extremely draining on the mental side, but also on the physical side. Can Sinner get enough rest and recovery to come and give it his all against the very powerful Aslan Karatsev in the Quarter-finals of the 2021 Dubai Open?

Aslan Karatsev was able to comeback from a set down against the No.17 seed Lorenzo Sonego in the Third Round, beating the Italian 3-6/6-3/6-4. Karatsev started out slowly, but once he found his rhythm, he dictated every single part of the match. Karatsev has extremely power in his groundstrokes, and he was able to make Sonego run from corner to corner chasing balls for a few hours. Sonego is a great player, but Karatsev just made him look mediocre in the second and third set. Karatsev is now the World No.42, and he will definitely make his way into the Top 30, if not the Top 20, this year if he continues to make his way into the later stages of tournaments. Karatsev now meets a very tough opponent in Jannik Sinner. Will he be able to make the Semi-finals here?

Jannik Sinner and Aslan Karatsev have never met before, and this is going to be their first encounter. Comparing the two players’ careers, you obviously say and think that Jannik Sinner is the much better player as he has more experience on the ATP Tour, won more prize money, more titles, and he has done all of this by the age of 19 compared to Karatsev who is 27. However, when looking at just the 2021 season, Aslan Karatsev has been the vastly superior player. Karatsev broke through this year at the Australian Open, making the Semi-finals there when no one gave him a chance to make it through the first round, and he has not made the later stages of a few tournaments.

Sinner, yes has won a title in 2021, but you can say that Karatsev has achieved more. It will be a tight match, but the power of Karatsev should be enough to upset the young Italian here.
