TennisSection previews the 2021 US Open as Angelique Kerber takes on Leylah Fernandez in the Round of 16 on Sunday, September 5th, 2021.
Will Angelique Kerber go through? Will Leylah Fernandez pull off the upset? This match will be an interesting one, where we have two talented lefties going head to head, it’s a clash of a veteran and a next-gen star. Who will move on to the quarterfinals at the 2021 US Open?
Angelique Kerber has been playing some solid tennis to reach the third round and take on the surprise opponent in Leylah Fernandez. She hasn’t been playing at her best though, and with the unreal amount of confidence Fernandez must have right now, despite being the heavy favorite on paper, it will be a hard one. Kerber will have to try and create some long and brutal rallies, as we saw Fernandez dispatch all of Osaka’s hard hitting and aggressive play with great defense, so unless there’s obvious opportunities to close in, Kerber should stick to just getting some heavy balls deep in the court, and sometimes run her around to keep up the pressure, if she does this successfully, I have no doubts she’ll be able to reach the quarterfinals at the 2021 US Open.
Leylah Fernandez got a very shocking win on Ashe in her third round match, taking out Naomi Osaka in 3 brutal sets. It was an excellent display of tennis, absorbing all of the pace from Osaka and just being able to turn every point into her favor. Kerber has been a little bit shaky, and while you could argue Fernandez has an advantage as she beat Osaka, you also have to realize that Osaka has not been playing her best stuff either. In order to defeat Angelique Kerber, Fernandez will have to play some really mobile tennis like she did last night, and what I mean by that is she’ll have to play a lot of defense, she was really good at doing that against Osaka and I feel like if she can just get every ball back and just wait for short balls, then she can pull off the upset to head through to the next round at the 2021 US Open.
Angelique Kerber and Leylah Fernandez have never met before, with this being their first career meeting. It’s a pretty interesting match-up, with two lefties with relatively similar playstyles. I just feel like Kerber does it better, she’s able to hit deep more consistently and would be better in those longer, heavier rallies. It could very well be close, and I feel like just because of the momentum Fernandez has, it will most likely go the distance. However, I don’t feel like it’ll be a super tight 3 setter with few breaks of serve, there will most likely be a lot of breaks, with the sets not being too close in score. Still though, we could be in for a fun match, Kerber however will have other plans and will most likely close out the match and move on to the quarterfinals at the 2021 US Open.
