TennisSection previews the 2022 Libema Open as Soonwoo Kwon takes on Hugo Gaston in the first round on Monday, June 6th, 2022.
Will Soonwoo Kwon get the win? Or will Hugo Gaston pull out his bag of tricks to surprise the South Korean No. 1? This could be a lot closer than what the odds imply as the grass court season kicks off at the Libema Open.
The second top-tier ATP event in the Netherlands will be the Libema Open as South Korea’s Soonwoo Kwon will be looking to make his presence felt. Kwon is one of the brightest 24-year-olds in the men’s game, having won a maiden ATP title last season and peaking at a career-high ranking of World No. 52. However, consistency has been a major issue for Kwon in the last three months. He has only managed one win in his last seven main draw matches and has since seen his ranking drop to 71. Defeat to Christopher O’Connell at the Surbiton Challenger was not the ideal start to his grass court season. And with confidence at an all-time low, could Hugo Gaston pounce?
Hugo Gaston, like Kwon, has had his fair share of losing streaks this season. He came to the French Open on the back of a four-match winless run. And if you stretch it further, he had one win in his last seven matches – hardly a record to inspire. But Paris sparked his season into life. Gaston produced a stunning upset in the first round when he knocked out the 19th seed Alex De Minaur in five sets. A straight sets victory over Pedro Cachinfollowed, before bowing out in the third round to an inspired Holger Rune. The Frenchman will certainly hope he has turned his campaign around with that run at the Roland Garros as he is set to make his debut appearance at the Libema Open.
Soonwoo Kwon leads Hugo Gaston 2-0 in their head-to-head. Both matches were contested earlier this season, with Kwon winning in straight sets each time. Only three spots separate the pair in the rankings, but the South Korean is heavily favored to get the better of the French lefty. The grass court season is one of the shortest on the tennis calendar and for Kwon to have secured one match under his belt in Surbiton, it could come in handy. Gaston might be on the back foot for most of the afternoon.
