US Open 2021: Daniil Medvedev vs. Felix Auger-Aliassime Tennis Pick and Prediction

US Open 2021: Daniil Medvedev vs. Felix Auger-Aliassime Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2021 US Open as Daniil Medvedev (2) faces Felix Auger-Aliassime (12) in the Semi-Finals on Friday September 10th, 2021.

Daniil Medvedev has been a man on a mission so far here at the 2021 US Open as he seeks to win the first Grand Slam title of his career. Next up in his path is the exciting young talent Felix Auger-Aliassime who is contesting his first ever Grand Slam Semi-Final. A blockbuster match is expected as both men will be hugely motivated to reach Sunday’s Final. Can the young Canadian cause the shocking upset and advance to the Final? Or will the big Russian get the win as expected to reach his second final here in Flushing Meadows?

Daniil Medvedev is currently ranked #2 on the ATP Tour and is the second seed here at the 2021 US Open. The Russian superstar has been outstanding so far here in New York and has only dropped one set en route to the Semis, surprisingly being pushed to four sets by his Quarter-Final opponent Botic van de Zandschulp. His trademark big serve and ultra-consistent penetrating groundstrokes have been in full force here, and he has been a bit more aggressive than usual, taking control of the points early rather than counterpunching. In this form there are not many men in world tennis that will be able to defeat him and he is a serious challenger to Novak Djokovic’s quest to win the Grand Slam. He enters this match against Felix Auger-Aliassime as the big favorite but will be well aware of the Canadian’s tools and will not underestimate him here.

Felix Auger-Aliassime is the twelfth seed here at the 2021 US Open and is ranked #15 in the world. The young Canadian star has had a tough path to the Semis but has been impressive nonetheless, defeating notable opponents in Roberto Bautista Agut and Frances Tiafoe to reach this stage. He will be well rested, as his Quarter-Final opponent Carlos Alcaraz withdrew in the second set due to injury, ensuring that Auger-Aliassime will be fresh and ready for his encounter with the world number two Daniil Medvedev. FAA has a very explosive game and if his errors are kept to a minimum he will be able to cause the Russian a lot of issues. He tends to struggle with consistency and loss of focus at these big events so while he has been looking good so far that is a big cause for concern. He is the underdog here but definitely is talented enough to make this competitive.

Somewhat surprisingly this will only be the second meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, with Medvedev leading the head to head 1-0. He won their only encounter back in 2018 in Canada in a tight three set match. Both men have been exceptional here in New York and Felix Auger-Aliassime has finally made his long-awaited breakthrough at a major, reaching the Semis for the first time. However, the Russian is simply on another level right now, and is completely locked in and ready to win his first Grand Slam title here. FAA is a fighter with an explosive game, and this match will surely be exciting but I don’t see him being able to win here. As much firepower as he has, Medvedev is one of the best defensive players in the game and will be able to handle the barrage of powerful groundstrokes that will surely come his way. The Canadian may be able to steal a set but that’s about as far as it will go, as the Russian should be able to control the tempo of this match. Daniil Medvedev will win here, advancing to the Final at the 2021 US Open.
