TennisSection previews the 2021 Washington Open as Cameron Norrie (7) takes on Marcos Giron in the Round of 32 on Tuesday, August 3rd, 2021.
Will Cameron Norrie continue to rise up the rankings this year as he has been in amazing form, reaching 4 finals and winning his maiden ATP Tour title? Will Marcos Giron be able to cause the upset and get a good win under his belt as he aims to impress his fellow local fans? Both players will put on a great showing here at the 2021 Washington Open, but only one will make their way to the Round of 16. Who will it be?
Marcos Giron had to make his way back from a set down against the qualifier, Illya Marchenko, beating the Ukrainian in 3 sets 4-6/6-4/7-6. Marcos Giron is a good player on his day, being able to play some good rallies from the baseline. However, one aspect is missing from Marcos’ game, the ability to get on top of points early and finishing them quickly. Marcos always seems to play long matches when he is the favourite, and we don’t see him dominating when he should be. As he now meets Cameron Norrie here at the 2021 Washington Open, he will have to ensure he comes in more and starts hitting winners rather than waiting for his opponent to miss.
Cameron Norrie has been in great form this year, reaching 4 ATP Tour finals in the last few months and most recently winning the Los Cabos Open to win his maiden ATP Tour title. Cameron has gained a lot of confidence on all surfaces this year, and he knows that with his lefty game he can keep opponents on their toes, especially on hard where it is harder to move at times. Cameron will come into the 2021 Washington Open knowing that he can go far here, especially as he meets someone like Marcos Giron, but he cannot take any opponent lightly.
Cameron Norrie and Marcos Giron have never met before, with this being their first career meeting on the ATP Tour. This is going to be an easy win for Cameron Norrie in my opinion. When looking at why so, Marcos Giron is having a tough time to come through a match against a qualifier, whilst Cameron Norrie has won 36 matches this year, amonst the highest wins on the ATP Tour this year. Cameron will know he will have a tougher road to the later stages here in Washington, as at some point he will most likely meet Rafael Nadal, but this will not stop him from playing well early here as he aims to reach the Round of 16 of the 2021 Washington Open.
