TennisSection previews the 2021 Swedish Open as Federico Coria meets Yannick Hanfmann in the Semi-Finals on Saturday July 17th, 2021.
An extremely unexpected yet well deserved Semi-Final is upon us here at the 2021 Swedish Open. Argentine Federico Coria will face Yannick Hanfmann for a spot in Sunday’s Final here in Bastad. Both men are unseeded, but have overcome higher ranked and more experienced opponents in their path to the Semis, and will be full of confidence heading into tomorrow’s match. Who will take it one step further and reach the Final here at the Nordea Open?
Federico Coria is unseeded here at the 2021 Swedish Open, and is currently ranked #77 on the ATP Tour. The Argentine is the younger brother of former world #3 Guillermo Coria, and has quietly been making a name for himself on the Tour. He has been outstanding so far here in Bastad, with a big win over Marco Cecchinato in the Round of 16, before stunning pre-tournament favorite Cristian Garin in the Quarters. Coria played some outstanding defensive tennis to defeat the big Chilean, seemingly breaking serve at will. The only issue was that he struggled to hold serve himself, which could be problematic here against his next opponent Yannick Hanfmann. With his confidence at an all-time high, he enters this match against the German as the favorite and is heavily favored to reach the Final here.
Like his opponent Federico Coria, Yannick Hanfmann is also unseeded here at the 2021 Swedish Open, and is ranked #107 on the ATP Tour. It is a big surprise that the German is at this stage of the event as he entered this week in very poor form, struggling to even win a match at times over the past weeks. He has found form at the right time, with strong wins over Thiago Monteiro and Jiri Vesely in the first two rounds, before overcoming Qualifier Arthur Rinderknech in the Quarter-Finals. This will be his first ATP Semi-Final and he will be hoping to take full advantage of it here, but overcoming the Argentine Federico Coria will be a tough ask for Hanfmann here.
This will be the first career meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, and it really is not one that I was expecting to have to predict. Both men have defied the odds to reach the Semis here, and even they will be pinching themselves. I expect this to be a keenly contested battle, with both men full of confidence and desperate to reach their first Final of the year. After considering everything, I am going with Federico Coria to get the win here. He is more experienced than Yannick Hanfmann and has been having a strong year I expect him to win a close contest here, and advance to the Final of the 2021 Swedish Open here in Bastad.
