TennisSection previews the 2022 Melbourne Open as Grigor Dimitrov takes on Botic van de Zandschulp in the Quarter-Finals on Friday, January 7th, 2021.
Will Botic van de Zandschulp continue to go far into tournaments and make a name for himself, continuing his form from the last few months of 2021? Will Grigor Dimitrov show us why he is one of the most entertaining players to watch on the ATP Tour? Both players know they can win this match, but only one will make their way to the Semi-Finals of the 2022 Melbourne Open. Who will it be?
Botic van de Zandschulp has been in great form this week, cruising through opponents, not losing a set. Botic just beat Mackenzie McDonald in 2 sets to book his spot in the Quarter-Finals, and he knows that based on his performance at the 2021 US Open and a few tournaments afterwards that he can make some waves this year. Botic has a huge serve and he is a great mover. He plays a bit like Hubert Hurkacz. Will Botic be able to cause a good upset here at the 2022 Melbourne Open as he now meets Grigor Dimitrov?
Grigor Dimitrov played his first match of 2022 against Facundo Bagnis, having to fight back from a set down to book his spot in the Quarter-Finals of the 2022 Melbourne Open. You could tell that he started the match a bit rusty, but as it went along he eventually found his rhythm. Dimitrov is a great player on his day, but he struggles with consistency at times, which means he can beat amazing players, but also lose to very low ranked ones back to back. Will he be able to prevent the upset by Botic van de Zandschulp?
Grigor Dimitrov and Botic van de Zandschulp have never met before, with this being their first career meeting. Although Dimitrov is higher ranked, has more experience, and has had a better career, when looking at the last few months of 2021, Botic was the far superior player. This one is tough to call just because you never know what you’re going to get from Dimitrov, but I think that Botic’s serve and his ability to take time away from opponents will give him the edge in this match at the 2022 Melbourne Open.
