Botic van de Zandschulp and Emil Ruusuvuori will put friendship on one side as they battle it out for a place in the Miami Masters quarterfinal. Who will prevail?
Botic van de Zandschulp will be chasing his first-ever Masters 1000 quarterfinal when he plays his good friend Emil Ruusuvuori in the fourth round of the Miami Masters. Outside his exploits at the US Open two years ago, victory on Tuesday would rank just as higher for the Dutchman who is 9-6 for the season after coming from behind to defeat last year’s finalist Casper Ruud.
Emil Ruusuvuori, meanwhile, ended the fairytale run of Japan’s Taro Daniel, winning 6-3, 7-6 in an hour and 44 minutes. Ruusuvuori planted 28 winners to Daniel’s 18. He converted two of his five break points, which proved decisive, with Daniel only managing to break him once in the match. Like Van de Zandschulp, Ruusuvuori will also eye his first Masters 1000 quarterfinal on Tuesday.

Botic van de Zandschulp and Emil Ruusuvuori are tied at 1-1 in their head-to-head. Both matches took place last season and on grass, with Ruusuvuori winning in Den Bosch in three sets, and the Dutchman getting his revenge at Wimbledon in four sets. We can easily see this match teetering towards another three-setter. van de Zandschulp saved an incredible 13 of 15 break points in his win over Ruud, and he is likely to match up with Ruusuvori’s aggressive brand of tennis with his excellent court coverage and improvisation skills from the baseline.
