TennisSection previews the 2022 Adelaide Open as Karen Khachanov takes on Egor Gerasimov in the quarterfinal on Friday, January 7th, 2022.
Could Karen Khachanov come unstuck against the power-hitting Belarusian Egor Gerasimov in the quarterfinals of the 2022 Adelaide Open? The Russian will need to shake off a few cobwebs to avoid an upset and here is our take on who we think will come out on top.
Karen Khachanov’s performance against Steve Johnson was far from vintage, but at this stage of the season, it doesn’t really matter. Wins are good for confidence, and having as many of them under your belt should give you the platform to succeed in subsequent tournaments. Khachanov can attest to that after last season’s heartbreaking defeat to Jannik Sinner in the semifinal of the Great Ocean Road Open, where he squandered a match point in defeat. The much-fancied Russian made a winning start to his Adelaide Open campaign after overcoming a second-set wobble and a spirited comeback by Steve Johnson to win in three sets. He hammered 16 aces and needed over two hours to subdue the American.
Karen Khachanov’s next assignment will come in the shape of Egor Gerasimov. The powerful Belarusian is on four-match winning spree at the 2022 Adelaide Open, tallying wins in qualifying and then shocking World No. 40 Marton Fucsovics in his first round. He would then get the better of Gianluca Mager in a tense three-setter in the second round. Surprisingly enough, Gerasimov’s two scalps this week in the main draw have come against players ranked higher in the ATP rankings.
Karen Khachanov leads the head-to-head over Egor Gerasimov 2-0, winning their most recent match at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. Gerasimov has done remarkably well to reach his first quarterfinal at the Adelaide Open since Montpellier last February. The Belarusian has done it the hard way, scaling the qualifying rounds and recording two mammoth wins over Top 100 players. Now the opposition will get even tougher for the World No. 113. Khachanov has Top 10 aspiration for the new season. He did not produce something close to his best tennis in the last round, but you get the impression he has a few gears to go with.
