Lorenzo Musetti lost in bad fashion in the Round of 16 at the Parma Open recently against Yoshihito Nishioka, losing in straight sets 6-3/6-2. Lorenzo Musetti other than that match has been in great form all year and I am sure that he will continue to rise up the rankings to get himself known on the ATP Tour. Musetti is young, has a flamboyant playing style which is reminiscent of a mixture of Stan Wawrinka and Dominic Thiem, but he still needs to develop his game somewhat to be able to perform week in and week out. How will the Italian fare against an experienced opponent in David Goffin here at Roland Garros who has been struggling with form?
David Goffin needs to get some positive results under his belt this year, having gone 5-4 in the 2021 clay court season, losing against opponents who you would expect for the Belgian to beat, such as Aljaz Bedene just a couple weeks ago at the Lyon Open. David Goffin is a very experienced player, and has had a lot of success in his career, but on clay this year I am unsure whether he can hang with the youngsters anymore. David Goffin lost in the first round here at the 2021 French Open last year against Jannik Sinner, and I am sure he does not want to lose to another Italian youngster again in Lorenzo Musetti straight away this year.
David Goffin and Lorenzo Musetti have never met before, with this being their first meeting. If this was last year, I would’ve chosen David Goffin to win in 3 with my eyes closed. However, this is going to be a very tight fight between these two great movers. I think that if this was a Best of 3 match, Lorenzo Musetti would have a real chance to win. However, because this is Best of 5, I expect for experience to prevail as David Goffin knows how to play long and draining matches. It will be one of the most entertaining matches of Roland Garros, with David Goffin winning in 5 sets.
