We have a South American collision in Bastad as Brazil’s Thiago Monteiro takes on Colombia’s Daniel Elahi Galan. Monteiro is a disappointing 7-15 for the season on the ATP Tour, notching his best result on clay in Santiago during the Golden Swing. He has fared slightly better on the Challenger level, bagging five wins from nine. The Brazilian is expected to drop as low as 120 when the new rankings are updated on Monday. However, he comes in with a bit of momentum on clay after reaching the quarterfinals at the Salzburg Challenger this past week.

Galan, meanwhile, is up to 56th in the live rankings courtesy of his breakthrough run at Grand Slam level at the Wimbledon Championships where he shockingly made it to the round of 16. While obviously he was aided by a very kind draw, the Colombian still produced something completely unlike him.

It will be interesting to see how Galan quickly adjusts to clay having not played since his defeat to Jannik Sinner at SW19. Although Monteiro comes in as the slight underdog, we reckon the Brazilian will be more at home on clay than the Colombian who could take some time to find his footing.
