TennisSection previews the 2021 Hamburg Open as Nikoloz Basilashvili (3) meets Laslo Djere in the Quarter-Finals on Friday, July 16th 2021.
Will Nikoloz Basilashvili be ready from the start to give it his all as this is his first match here at the 2021 Hamburg Open as his Second Round opponent retired with an injury? Will Laslo Djere be able to come out here and get a huge win under his belt, perhaps not for who he has beaten, but for rather the fact that he will more likely than not meet Stefanos Tsitsipas. Who will make their way to the Semi-Finals of the 2021 Hamburg Open?
Laslo Djere has been on fire all week, causing the upset against the higher ranked Jan-Lennard Struff in the First Round, and now beating the qualifier who has a big future on clay in my opinion in Thiago Seyboth Wild, beating him in straight sets 7-6/6-1. Laslo Djere is underrated for sure on the ATP Tour, and he has been very solid in these smaller ATP 250 and 500 tournaments, continuously making his way to the second round or quarter finals. Laslo Djere will be happy with his game this week, but he now has to be even better as he meets the 2x champion here in Hamburg, Nikoloz Basilashvili.
Nikoloz Basilashvili will be both happy and displeased that he is in the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 Hamburg Open. He will be happy because he has not had to do anything to get here, but he will also not be happy about the fact he has not played a match yet because Sebastian Baez had to withdraw from the match before it even started with an injury. Nikoloz is a 2x champion here in Hamburg and he will be working hard behind closed doors to ensure he is ready to go from the start as he wants to show us that he is strong on clay. However, he will meet a tough opponent in his first match here in Laslo Djere who has performed well all week.
Nikoloz Basilashvili and Laslo Djere have met 5 times before, with Laslo Djere leading the head to head 3-2. If this was a couple years ago I would have chosen Basilashvili to win this match. However, with the form that Djere has shown here at the 2021 Hamburg Open, the fact that he destroyed Basilashvili earlier this year on clay in Cagliari 6-2/6-0, and the fact that Basilashvili has not yet played a match here this week so he will be rusty, I believe Djere will win. It will be tight as the 2x Hamburg Open champion will not go out easily, but Djere will make his way to the Semi-Finals of the 2021 Hamburg Open.
