Cameron Norrie dug out a gutsy win over former World No. 7 David Goffin to reach the Lyon Open quarterfinals for the fourth time in five visits. In three times before this, Norrie reached the championship match twice and walked away with the title last season. As fate would have it, he’ll take on Sebastian Baez on Thursday in a rematch of their quarterfinal last season at the same tournament. Norrie won it last year, 7-5 in the third. And Baez has done remarkably well to still be in the tournament, but his cause was aided by countryman Pedro Cachin who choked a set and a break lead in the round of 16. Baez’s game is defined by his consistency in outlasting opponents from long rallies, using his ability to open up the court and quick feet. But Norrie won’t give him a cushion here, partly because the Brit has two different shots from either wing. His backhand is flatter than a pancake and it’s the kind of variation which allows him to stay neutral in defense. I’ll still expect Baez to expose a few chinks in his game, but Norrie should be strong enough to get another W.
