The top seed Max Purcell picked up his 33rd win at the Challenger level, beating Yasutaka Uchiyama 6-4, 7-5 in their quarterfinal match. Purcell served for the match at 5-3 up in the second set and had to regain his composure after he was broken and was visibly angry at himself. But he broke to win the match after outrallying his opponent a few games later. He’ll take on World No. 162 Gabriel Diallo in the last four. The Canadian authored a shock win over second seed Jordan Thompson, 6-3, 7-5. Diallo played a clean match from the baseline, facing a single break point, which he erased, and produced some powerful hitting right at the end to break Thompson and serving to love for the match. Diallo is extremely dangerous when he is allowed to dictate rallies as he showed against Purcell’s fellow Aussie. He also moved very well retrieving balls and redirecting them for clear winners or at the very least generating a flurry of errors from the Thompson’s racket. It’s a tricky test for Purcell. And even after his electric first half of the season, I’m not certain he’ll problem-solve his way into another final here.
