They had won once in three tournaments at that level, registering that solitary victory in Indian Wells. But that has changed during the course of this week at the Madrid Open, with Kasatkina getting the better of Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Lesia Tsurenko in straight sets.

Veronika Kudermetova has been equally impressive and more tested albeit against slightly better opposition. She overcame the challenges of Nuria Parrizas Diaz and Anastasia Potapova to reach an unlikely fourth-round berth in Madrid. Prior to last week, Kudermetova had lost her last four matches in a row.

Daria Kasatkina leads Veronika Kudermetova 2-0 in their head-to-head. Kasatkina won their high-stakes quarterfinal at last year’s French Open in two tight sets. Even without playing so well and suffering mid-match wobble, Kudermetova has a serve that can save her blushes. So I do expect her to stay in the running here. But after a three-hour marathon against Potapova, she’ll be up against it physically. Kasatkina’s price is too good to ignore here.
