Frances Tiafoe looks to reach the fourth round at the 2023 Madrid Open, but Argentina’s Pedro Cachin has a clay court pedigree. Will ‘Big Foe’ stumble?

Frances Tiafoe didn’t look ready in Barcelona this past week, going down to Emil Ruusuvuori in the second round. But he made sure there would be no repeat of that shock result at the Madrid Open as he took care of business against Tomas Martin Etcheverry – incidentally the player he defeated to win the Houston title in the second week of April.

Pedro Cachin scored a big upset in the second round as he defeated compatriot Francisco Cerundolo 6-1, 7-6 to reach the round of 32 of the Madrid Open for the first time. He broke Cerundolo’s serve twice in a one-sided first set. And the pair were locked in a tight battle in the second which went into a breaker, where Cachin got a decisive mini-break at 7-6 before closing out the win on his second match point.

Frances Tiafoe and Pedro Cachin have not played each other on the ATP Tour, with this third-round match at the Madrid Open being their first meeting. Tiafoe rushed into the thick of the action last week where he was bundled out in the second round in Barcelona. But he’s managed to reset and recharge and we saw a composed performance against Etcheverry who served impeccably throughout and Tiafoe had to be very patient for his opportunities. He’ll get another good test against Cachin regards clay as his strongest surface. But I can’t see Tiafoe being as charitable as Cerundolo on serve.
