Eugenie Bouchard has rolled back the years in Madrid. But will she come unstuck against Italy’s Martina Trevisan in the second round of the Madrid Open?

Eugenie Bouchard dropped just seven games in total as she breezed through the Madrid Open qualifiers. And in playing in the main draw for the first time since her scintillating run to the quarterfinal back in 2017, she registered a come-from-behind win over fellow qualifier Dayana Yastremska. Despite losing the first set to the Ukrainian in a tiebreak, Bouchard clawed her way into the match and eventually ran away a comfortable winner, 6-7, 6-2, 6-2.

Martina Trevisan, meanwhile, had a first-round bye, and will play for the first time since her retirement in Stuttgart last week. Trevisan looked in fine spirits when she dominated Haddad Maia in Germany, taking a 5-3 lead in the first set. But it didn’t long as the Italian lost her way and lost the first set 5-7. And just two games in the second set, she called it quits, with what appeared to be a thigh injury. Let’s see if she can return to winning ways at the Madrid Open.
