Thankfully, the injury was not as brutally damaging as it looked on screen, and she has since made full recovery to compete at this year’s clay swing. Let’s see if she’ll kick off her Madrid Open campaign with a win.

China’s Xiyu Wang scored a huge upset on Wednesday, storming back from a set down to win 6-7, 6-3, 6-4 against in-form Varvara Gracheva to reach the second round of the Madrid Open. The 22-year-old was on a dreadful run of form coming to the tournament with just three wins in the first three months of the campaign.

Bianca Andreescu and Xiyu Wang have not played each on the WTA Tour, with this second-round match at the Madrid Open being their first meeting. Andreescu has a tough draw this fortnight, with two Grand Slam champions lurking in her side of the draw in the next couple of rounds. But with her fitness very much in question she could be vulnerable on Friday. Wang is no stranger at taking on the WTA’s big names, with wins over Krejcikova (on clay), Sakkari and Victoria Azarenka already in her resume.
