TennisSection previews the 2021 Washington Open as Jannik Sinner (5) meets Jenson Brooksby in the Semi-Finals on Saturday August 7th, 2021.
Fifth seeded Italian Jannik Sinner is in search of his second title this year and will face the unseeded Jenson Brooksby for a spot in Sunday’s Final. The American youngster has been outstanding so far this season and is seeking to cause yet another upset and reach his second ATP final of the season. Who will win and advance to the Final?
Jannik Sinner is ranked #24 on the ATP Tour and is the fifth seed here at the 2021 Washington Open. The Italian is still only 19 years old but has truly established himself towards the top of the rankings. Sinner has been outstanding so far here at the Citi Open, steamrolling past Emil Ruusuvuori, Sebastian Korda and Steve Johnson to reach this stage. His ultra-aggressive baseline game is hard to handle when he is in form, and after a poor string of results he will be delighted to be back in form. He enters this match against Jenson Brooksby as the favorite but should be wary of his opponent’s great recent form and shouldnt underestimate him.
Jenson Brooksby is ranked #130 on the ATP Tour and entered this event as a Wild Card. The young American is currently enjoying a breakout season, winning three Challenger titles and reaching his first ATP Final in Newport. We at TennisSection have been proven wrong by Brooksby in each round so far here at the 2021 Washington Open, as he has upset heavily favored players Kevin Anderson, Frances Tiafoe, Felix Auger-Aliassime and John Millman to reach this stage. He crushed John Millman in a surprisingly one sided display, overpowering the veteran Aussie from the baseline. While he is the underdog here, a win is not out of the question given his giant-killing exploits this week.
This will be the first meeting between the two players and it is sure to be an exciting one. Sinner is very young but has firmly established himself among the top 25 players in the world while Brooksby is now in the middle of his breakout. This match looks very one-sided on paper in favor of the Italian, but we cannot keep ignoring the outstanding play of Jenson Brooksby who has caused four upsets this week. While I think this match will be closer than the rankings suggest I still expect Jannik Sinner to win this match. He is a stronger player in all categories and his experience at this level will be crucial here. The American has been great this week here at the 2021 Washington Open but his run will end here, as Sinner advances to the Final where he will meet the winner of Kei Nishikori and Mackenzie McDonald.
