TennisSection previews the 2021 Eastbourne Open as Alex de Minaur (2) meets Soonwoo Kwon (LL) in the Semi-finals on Friday, June 25th 2021.
Will it be the young and determined Soonwoo Kwon to make his way to the Final of the Viking International as he aims to make a name for himself? Will it be the more experienced and successful youngster, Alex de Minaur, to make his way to the Final and give himself a shot at his second title of the year? Both players have played solid tennis all week, but only one will make their way to the Final. Who will it be?
Soonwoo Kwon put on a very solid and composed performance in the Quarter-finals, beating the always tough Ilya Ivashka in straight sets 6-4/7-5. Soonwoo Kwon started the year off well and was consistently making the second or quarter finals of ATP 250 tournaments. However, during the clay season he was not seen much as he is not as good on that surface. Now that we are on flatter and faster surfaces in grass, he is back and aiming to make a name for himself. However, if he is to make a breakthrough and make the Final here at the 2021 Eastbourne Open, he needs to cause a big upset against the in form Alex de Minaur.
Alex de Minaur did what Alex de Minaur does best, not lose to Vasek Pospisil. In the Quarter-final, Alex won in straight sets 6-4/6-4. It is great to see Alex finding back to back tournament consistency as he aims to make the Final here in Eastbourne. Alex is so hard to play as he is just so fast, so you have to be very accurate with your shots, otherwise it is more likely than not going to be returned by Alex. Alex de Minaur fell short at the Queen’s Open last week, losing in the Semi-finals to Matteo Berrettini. I am sure that Alex will not want to let Soonwoo Kwon win and prevent him from getting a shot at the title.
Alex de Minaur and Soonwoo Kwon have never met before, with this being their first meeting on the ATP Tour. Both players have performed well all week here at the 2021 Eastbourne Open. However, Alex has been more solid consistently on grass. Soonwoo Kwon pops up here and there in these ATP 250 tournaments, but Alex is consistently giving it his best. I expect for Alex de Minaur to have an easy win here as he aims to make his way to the Final and potentially achieve his second title of the year and gain momentum right before Wimbledon.
