TennisSection previews the 2022 Pune Open as Stefano Travaglia (8) meets Elias Ymer in the Quarter-Finals on Friday February 4th, 2022.
Eighth seeded Italian Stefano Travaglia will do battle with the young Swede Elias Ymer in the Quarter-Finals of the 2022 Pune Open. Both men have defied the odds to reach this stage of the competition, with Ymer in particular standing out. Can he keep his incredible streak going and reach his first Semi-Final? Or will the Italian back up his seeding by getting the win here?
Stefano Travaglia is the eighth seed here at the 2022 Pune Open and is ranked #93 in the world. The Italian looked convincing in his Second Round win over Yuki Bhambri after struggling in the First Round, and will be looking to build on that momentum that he has generated. After a very poor start to the season where he lost his first three matches he is beginning to look like his normal self, and with his experience he will be liking his chances against the red-hot Elias Ymer. Travaglia should be considered the favorite, but this is by no means an easy match as his opponent is in giant-killing form.
Elias Ymer came through the Qualifying Rounds here at the 2022 Pune Open, and it is fair to say that no-one could have predicted that he would have made it this far. The young Swede stunned number one seed and top-20 player Aslan Karatsev in the previous round, and seems to be in the form of his life. He served extremely well during that match, and was his usual tenacious self from the baseline. While his opponent Stefano Travaglia is the favorite due to him being much higher ranked, it is hard to bet against the red-hot youngster and he will be seeking to cause yet another upset here in Pune.
This is the first meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, and it should make for a very close and interesting match. Both men have played well this week after disappointing starts to their season, and there is very little to separate them. Stefano Travaglia has the edge in experience, while Elias Ymer has the higher upside, and is in better form at the moment. While many will go with the Italian, I think that Ymer is still riding the wave of momentum from that win over Karatsev, and I think that he will win this match. Once he can keep his errors low and focus throughout the match, he has enough firepower to dominate his opponent, and he should advance to his first Semi-Final here at the 2022 Pune Open.
