Andrey Rublev displayed an impressive performance against Jiri Lehecka to take him out 6-4 6-2, and that sends a message to the rest of the field that Rublev is definitely still one of the players to beat at this event. With a semifinal appearance last year, he’ll hope to equal or better that result but to do so he’ll need to battle past Ugo Humbert, a player he’s struggled with in the past. Let’s see if he can do so and book a spot in the Round of 16 at the 2023 Indian Wells Open.

Ugo Humbert took out 25th seed Denis Shapovalov, and while we should give the Frenchman credit for digging out the win, Shapovalov hasn’t looked much worse than in that match in some time. Andrey Rublev will be a really tough opponent for Humbert to battle through, with Rublev in great form and with the ability to put so much weight behind his shot, I can’t see Humbert having the tools to deal with him on a slow hard court like here at the 2023 Indian Wells Masters.

Andrey Rublev and Ugo Humbert have met twice before, with the head to head being tied at 1-1. Rublev took him out in a tight 3-setter in 2020 in St. Petersburg, with Humbert getting his revenge in the 2021 Halle final. Neither of those tournaments are remotely close to the conditions here in Indian Wells, and despite his previous struggles with Humbert, I can’t see Rublev really struggling too much in this case as he looks to storm through into yet another Round of 16 at the 2023 Indian Wells Masters.
