This will be a fascinating one, where we have one of the most in form players in the world and a very hyped-up Spanish youngster taking on the Croatian major champion. Who will triumph and move on to the Round of 16 at the 2022 Miami Open?
Carlos Alcaraz got a great win over Fucsovics, maintaining his excellent form and showing he’s a force to be reckoned with in this tournament. Marin Cilic is a cool customer though, and Alcaraz will struggle with him, at least a little bit. Cilic has had decent results lately, still in the top 30 players in the world and fighting hard. I think the matchup is actually pretty good for Cilic, but the level of Alcaraz at the moment will likely stay afloat coming up against the Croat at the 2022 Miami Open.
Marin Cilic got a great win himself, I think these courts are good for him as they’re not as slow as Miami so he can still utilize his ability on the faster surfaces as we’ve seen from him throughout his career. I think he can for sure put up a fight coming up against Carlos Alcaraz, but with the consistent level the Spaniard has been showing, I don’t think he’ll be able to pull it out in the end as he aims to extend his stay at the 2022 Miami Open.
Carlos Alcaraz and Marin Cilic have met once before, with Marin Cilic leading the head to head 1-0. Their one meeting came on the clay last year, Alcaraz’s best surface and Cilic’s worst, with Cilic still winning. Obviously, Alcaraz has improved tremendously, but for me that shows that Cilic has the ability to fight in this one, I would not be incredibly surprised if the Spaniard fell in this stage, but I expect him to get the win and book his place in the last 16 at the 2022 Miami Open.
