Cincinnati Masters 2022: Cameron Norrie vs. Borna Coric Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2022 Cincinnati Open as Cameron Norrie takes on Borna Coric in the semifinals on Saturday, August 20th, 2022.

Will Cameron Norrie get the win? Will Borna Coric pull off the upset? This will be a fascinating one, where we have an unexpected but very high quality semifinal between the British No. 1 and a phenomenal player on the comeback road. Who will triumph and move on to the finals at the 2022 Cincinnati Open?

Cameron Norrie got the biggest win of his career, taking down Carlos Alcaraz for the first time in now 4 meetings, winning 7-6 6-7 6-4. In 3 long hours, he had to grind and deal with the aggression of the Spaniard, but unfortunately for him, it won’t be getting easier. As he comes up against Borna Coric, he’ll have to be very weary. If he wants to win this one, he’ll have to keep the tactic he used against Alcaraz, which is taking his flat backhand crosscourt to the forehand of Coric, I’m afraid that Norrie might fall vulnerable to the crosscourt backhand of Coric, allowing him to neutralize his forehand. Let’s see if Norrie can make a 2nd career masters final here at the 2022 Cincinnati Open.

Borna Coric just keeps on rolling, taking down Felix-Auger-Aliassime 6-4 6-4, serving phenomenally well, losing just 1 point on his first serve. He’ll need to keep it up against Cameron Norrie, who will also be going into this one with plenty of confidence. If Coric continues his level of serving, I expect him to be the guy Norrie is chasing in this one, but he’ll need to maintain his level of aggression, especially with his backhand. If he can stay patient but slowly force Norrie to lose momentum and give him some attackable balls, I expect him to be able to pull this one off and book a place in the final at the 2022 Cincinnati Open.

Cameron Norrie and Borna Coric have met twice before, with the head to head being level at 1-1. Their two meetings came in 2018 and 2019, with Norrie surprisingly claiming the first in their only hard court meeting, and Coric taking him down on the clay the next year. Neither meeting is particularly indicative of how this contest will go for me, but Norrie was able to win his quarterfinal by slowly winding down the constant pace and aggression of Alcaraz, but Borna Coric is a far more patient player, and I think he’ll be able to pull off yet another monumental win as he looks to advance to the finals of the 2022 Cincinnati Open.
