Winston-Salem Open 2021: Ilya Ivashka vs Mikael Ymer Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2021 Winston-Salem Open as Ilya Ivashka takes on Mikael Ymer in the Final on Saturday, August 28th, 2021.

Will Ilya Ivashka claim the title? Will Mikael Ymer pull off the upset and become a champion of the ATP Tour? This match will be an interesting one, where we have two unexpected finalists playing the tennis of their lives going head to head. Who will win the 2021 Winston-Salem Open?

Ilya Ivashka played a flawless match against Ruusuvuori, defeating him 6-2 6-1, he converted 5/9 break points and faced 0 of them throughout the match. With perfect, powerful shots going through the court really throwing Ruusuvuori off, he was easily able to overpower him and close in on every opportunity he had. It could very well be a similar case coming up against Mikael Ymer, although admittedly Ymer is playing some great tennis this week. For me, the key lies in how aggressive Ivashka will play, he’s been playing so well because he’s playing aggressively without many unforced errors, those two things combined create an extremely dangerous opponent. He’s even serving quite well, having served at 63%, winning 83% on first serve and 75% on second serve, some exceptional numbers, facing zero break points showing his dominance off that wing. Ymer is not a huge serve, so Ivashka should also be confident in that department in that he will be able to make a lot of returns and get into an aggressive position right away at the 2021 Winston-Salem Open.

Mikael Ymer is for sure quite the surprise in the finals, having upset Carlos Alcaraz to earn his spot, 7-5 6-3. Considering the form Alcaraz was in, Ymer should be very proud of his win and should absolutely be taken as a serious contender in this final. While Ilya Ivashka will be a very tough opponent, considering how many things he’s doing well, particularly playing aggressive and serving at a high percentage allowing him to play aggressive even easier, Ymer definitely has the means to win. Ymer is not really an offensive or defensive player, leaving room to expand depending on his opponent. In my mind, Ymer will have to play quite aggressively, however, he will have to do it from tough positions on the court, Ivashkas shots will go very deep and fast in the court, causing Ymer to hit short and allowing Ivashka to easily win many points that way. Ymer will need to hit heavy and hard from those positions to make sure that does not happen to him, while it is easier said than done, he shouldn’t miss too much considering the amount of spin he will be putting on the ball, while it will be very hard, he certainly will have the chance to at least be competitive in the final of the 2021 Winston-Salem Open.

Ilya Ivashka and Mikael Ymer have never met before, with this being their first career meeting. The match-up isn’t too hard to read here, if Ivashka plays aggressively as he did in his semifinals match and in his previous couple of matches, he should get a rather comfortable win. While if he gets into too many long rallies, Ymer will have ample opportunities where Ivashka will most certainly make many unforced errors and not be able to play as aggressively. Of course, these situations are tough to set up, and I suspect Ymer will have to serve better than he has this tournament to avoid being outplayed on his own serve due to aggressive returns off second ones Ivashka will get looking at Ymer’s percentages today. Ivashka will also have to maintain his level of service, although, he will most likely be able to do this easily and be able to take the match in a rather comfortable match, we’re in for a treat here in the final of the 2021 Winston-Salem Open.
