Nick Kyrgios is in a race against time to be fit for the 2022 Australian Open. The enigmatic Aussie recently tested positive for coronavirus and arrives in Melbourne with zero matches under his belt. His form is a non-entity. So will the Australian recover in time to lock horns with Liam Broady?
Nick Kyrgios had signed up for two warm-up tournaments as a wild card in the past two weeks. He withdrew on the eve of the tournament at the Melbourne Summer Set after being bedridden due to asthma. Then last Monday, he was forced to pull out from the Sydney International due to Covid-19. That left Kyrgios with limited on-court preparation to limber up before the Australian Open. It is pertinent to note, Kyrgios last featured in a singles match at the Laver Cup last September losing to Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets. Since the start of 2020 season, Kyrgios has only played a grand total of 25 matches. He may not be up to the task when he takes on Liam Broady on Tuesday.
Fifth time is the charm for Liam Broady who has successfully qualified into the main draw of the 2022 Australian Open. Broady had fallen at this stage in four previous appearances, but ensured there would be no such recurrence this year. Victories over Kacper Zuk, J.J. Wolf and then dramatically against Roman Safiullin earned him an unlikely place in the draw. Broady had one foot out of the tournament when he trailed in-form Safiullin by a set and 5-2, before mounting an incredible comeback from the dead. It is likely that Broady’s match against Nick Kyrgios will have similar drama.
Nick Kyrgios has never faced off against Liam Broady at any level before. The Aussie’s form is somewhat of a mystery and we are not even certain he will play next week. Broady, meanwhile, has put together a terrific run in qualifying for the Australian Open. The odds on Broady to spring an upset are plummeting by the minute and backing the left-hander from Stockport could be worthwhile.
