TennisSection previews the 2021 Halle Open as Kei Nishikori meets Sebastian Korda in the Round of 16 on Thursday June 17th, 2021.
A battle is expected here at the 2021 Halle Open as Japanese star Kei Nishikori will face Sebastian Korda of the USA in the Round of 16. Both men had tough wins in the First Round and will be looking to go a step further here. Who will get the win and advance to the Quarter-Finals here in Halle?
Kei Nishikori is currently ranked #57 and has recently being having some success on the ATP Tour again after a few years suffering with loss of form and injuries. Grass is his least favorite surface but the former world #4 has had quite a bit of success on it, reaching the Semi-Finals here in Halle twice and the Quarter-Finals of Wimbledon twice. The Japanese star had a very difficult opening round win over Ricardas Berankis but was able to recover nicely to claim the three set win. While he enters this match against Sebastian Korda as the slight favorite, the American has shown that he can play some excellent grass-court tennis and this is sure to be an entertaining battle.
Sebastian Korda is ranked #50 on the ATP Tour and is one of the fastest rising stars on the circuit. At the young age of 20 he has already claimed his first career title in Parma and will be looking to build on that success. After a very disappointing French Open campaign he will be very eager to bounce back quickly here at the 2021 Halle Open, but has been given a very tough draw here, first facing Roberto Bautista Agut and now coming up against Kei Nishikori. While Korda had never played a match on grass at this level, his game suits the surface very well with his huge serve and powerful groundstrokes. He was very impressive in his win over RBA and his confidence will be sky high. While he is the underdog yet again against Nishikori, this is a winnable match for the young American.
This is the first meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, and it is sure to be an exciting battle. This is an extremely hard match to predict, mainly due to the fact that Sebastian Korda has only played one match on grass. While he was very impressive in that victory, it is hard to base a prediction with such as small sample size. Kei Nishikori is a very accomplished player on this surface and will be a very difficult opponent. With that being said, I am going with Sebastian Korda to continue his unbeaten streak on grass. Nishikori struggled in his opening win and I expect him to struggle yet again with Korda’s explosive game. I think it will be an extremely close match, with the young American coming away with the close win to advance to the Quarter-Finals here at the 2021 Halle Open.
