Will Andy Murray get his Wimbledon campaign off to a flier? There are huge question marks regarding the abdominal injuryhe picked up in Stuttgart, so James Duckworth could fancy his chances of shocking the tennis world on Monday.
Andy Murray has been spectacularly backed to win his third Wimbledon title by John McEnroe. While stranger things have happened in tennis (not that it would be strange to see Murray winning it, having done so a couple of times), but to do it with a metallic hip would be quite simply astounding. There is hugespeculation regarding Murray’s fitness after picking up an abdominal strain in his last tournament in Stuttgart where he finished runner-up to Matteo Berrettini. He subsequently pulled out at the ATP 500 event at Queens where Murray is a former champion.
James Duckworth will attempt to throw the cat amongst the pigeons in front of the Centre Court crowd. Duckworth put together his best run at Wimbledon last year when he made the third round. Victories over Radu Albot and Sam Querrey helped his cause to crack the world’s Top 50 later that year, but the Aussie has not had the best of starts to life in 2022. He has only played 11 matches since the turn of the year, with injuries playing a key part in his absence for nearly four months after the Australian Open. He failed to win a main draw match on grass in four tournaments, losing most recently to Lorenzo Sonego in Eastbourne.
Andy Murray leads James Duckworth 2-0 in their head-to-head. The Briton defeated the World No. 77 at the US Open in 2018, and then at Brisbane in 2019. Fitness permitting, I cannot see anything but a Murray win on Monday. Duckworth has the tools to make life difficult for the two-time Wimbledon champion, but his health has also been in turmoil this year. Murray should breeze into Round two.
