Wimbledon 2022: Casper Ruud vs. Albert Ramos Vinolas Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2022 Wimbledon as Casper Ruud takes on Albert Ramos Vinolas in the first round on Monday, June 27th, 2022.

Casper Ruud will be keen to put his Roland Garros final defeat behind him when he gets his 2022 Wimbledon campaign underway on Monday. The Norwegian will face another Spaniard in Albert Ramos Vinolas. Can he advance into the second round?

Casper Ruud became the first Norwegian to reach a Grand Slam singles final at this month’s French Open. Ruud achieved his childhood dream of playing his idol Rafael Nadal in the biggest clay-court tournament in tennis. But ultimately, he was outclassed and swatted aside by the legendary Spaniard. Ruud will not be too down on himself. He has attained a new career-high ranking of World No. 5 ahead of Wimbledon. The 23-year-old made a brief stop at London’s Queens Club where he suffered a shock first-round defeat to virtually unknown Briton Ryan Peniston. Since then he has played a couple of Exhibition matches in Hurlingham.

Albert Ramos Vinolas, meanwhile, will be looking to post his first win outside clay in 2022, which has been long overdue. All of his 14 match wins this term have come on the dirt. He won his fourth career title earlier this year in Cordoba and reached two more semifinals on the surface, in Santiago and Estorilrespectively. Outside clay, he has only played the Australian Open, Miami and more recently at Queens, losing each time in the first round. Can he change the pattern at Wimbledon?

Albert Ramos Vinolas leads Casper Ruud 3-1 in their head-to-head. All four meetings prior to this were contested on clay, with the Spanish lefty winning the first three matches. Ruud did manage to turn the tables in their last meeting in Santiago two years ago. Ruud has developed into an all-round player with the ability to adjust to other surfaces other than clay. Grass though will be the ultimate test as the balls travel much quicker. Nonetheless, I expect the Norwegian world No. 5 to prove too strong for the inconsistent Ramos Vinolas who is woefully out of form outside clay.
