Will Carlos Alcaraz overcome the big-serving Jan-Lennard Struff? This match could be a potential banana peel for the Spanish sensation, but recent form suggests Struff is unlikely to trouble the fifth seed in the Wimbledon opener.
It takes an exceptional talent to be instilled as one of the pre-tournament favorites to win a tournament he will be playing for just the second time in his career. Carlos Alcaraz is no ordinary tennis player, that we are sure of. But if anything, Roland Garrosgave us a further reminder, that this is still a learning process for the young Spanish phenom. Alcaraz has already achieved more at his age than his peers. And his recent breakthrough at Masters 1000 level has probably generated more hype than anticipated. So can Alcaraz go all the way at Wimbledon in 2022?
Alcaraz does not have the luxury of a cushy first round match. He has drawn the big-serving Jan-Lennard Struff, who is very much capable of pulling off an upset or two at this tournament. Struff has made the third round of Wimbledon twice in his career, and has already beaten the Spanish teenager at Grand Slam level, so he will be in buoyant mood on Monday. The German, however, has endured a disastrous 2022, which can only get worse from here. With just two wins all season, Struff could very well be sent packing by the energetic Alcaraz.
Jan-Lennard Struff surprisingly leads the head-to-head 1-0, beating Carlos Alcaraz at last year’s French Open in straight sets. The scenario should a whole lot different this time. Struff is in the midst of his worst-ever season on the ATP Tour, while Alcaraz is enjoying his finest. While an upset is seemingly not out of reach, it is tough to imagine Alcaraz going down to a player who has only won two matches all year.
