TennisSection previews the 2022 Queens Open as Lorenzo Musetti takes on Alexander Bublik in the first round on Monday, June 13th, 2022.
The one-handed Lorenzo Musetti will take on the mercurial Alexander Bublik. Both excellent shot makers on their day, but consistency continues to be their biggest hindrance. Who will come out on top in their first meeting at the Queens Open?
Lorenzo Musetti endured a subdued start to 2022. He won back-to-back matches just once between January and March. In that time frame he lost eight matches and only won five. His ranking plummeted even further. But a return to the clay kick started his season proper. Musetti more than tripled his win tally for the year, reaching the Round of 16 of the Madrid Open as a qualifier and then won the Forli Challenger on home soil. That upturn in results has seen Musetti re-enter the world’s Top 60 and we can only hope his form lasts for the entirety of the 2022 season.
Alexander Bublik, meanwhile, ran into an inspired Andy Murray at the Stuttgart Open this past week. The unpredictable Kazakh continues to play second fiddle in this matchup as Murray defeated him in straight sets. Bublik’s form has fallen off a cliff since winning his first-ever ATP title in Montpellier. His clay court season was a disaster, with the World No. 42 winning just two matches form six events. And given his slow transition to the grass, he is going to be tested by the one-handed Musetti at the Queens Open.
Alexander Bublik and Lorenzo Musetti have not clashed on the ATP Tour. Monday’s match at the Queens Open will be their first official meeting. 24-year-old Bublik has more experience of tour-level tennis and in particular on grass. His big serve and toolbox of trick shots will come in handy against the young Italian who is more at home on slow courts. If Bublik can get his first serve hitting the right spots and does not lose his concentration, he should be too strong to overcome his own jitters from the past few weeks.
