TennisSection previews the 2022 Indian Wells Grigor Dimitrov takes on Alexander Bublik in the third round on Tuesday, March 15th, 2022.
Will Grigor Dimitrov win back-to-back matches for the first time since the opening week? Or will Alexander Bublik back up his win over Andy Murray by taking out another big name in Indian Wells? We have a fascinating third-round match in prospect, so who will advance?
Girgor Dimitrov dodged Tommy Paul after the initial draw placed him to face the American in the second round. But with Novak Djokovic withdrawal’s very late on the eve of the tournament, the seeds have been reshuffled a little bit, and Dimitrov instead, opened against Australia’s Jordan Thompson. Thompson had already secured a match win under his belt following his big win over a struggling Goffin. But he was no match for Dimitrov’s accuracy and precision. The Bulgarian tallied 83% first-serve points and broke serve three times from four opportunities.
Alexander Bublik, meanwhile, has carried his momentum all the way to North America. Bublik won his maiden ATP title last month on the European indoor hard courts of Montpellier, but it took him a while to soak in that win. His defeat to Murray in Rotterdam was case in point. However, the Kazakh bounced back in style at Indian Wells, snapping his two-match winless streak by avenging his loss to the Briton. It was his first career win over Murray in three meetings and has now advanced into the third round at the Indian Wells tennis garden on his main draw debut.
Alexander Bublik leads Grigor Dimitrov 2-1 in their head-to-head. Dimitrov, however, won their last meeting on the hard courts of Cincinnati. This should be a cracking contest at Indian Wells, because both players like to play on the offence. I think Dimtrov’s A-game trumps Bublik any day of the week. But these days you are not quite sure which kind of Dimitrov would turn up. Which is why I am backing Bublik to keep up his fine form on the surface this season.
