Indian Wells 2022: Alex De Minaur vs. Tommy Paul Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2022 Indian Wells as Alex De Minaur takes on Tommy Paul in the third round on Tuesday, March 15th, 2022.

Will Alex De Minaur avoid falling victim to fast-rising American Tommy Paul? Following his career-best win over Alexander Zverev at Indian Wells, Paul will be unfazed on the task that awaits him in the third round. Can the American deliver another stunner?

Alex De Minaur triumphed in the all-Australian clash against John Millman, winning 7-6 6-3 in an hour and 40 minutes. A closer first set could have easily gone either way, but once De Minaur locked it in the bag, it was a mountain to climb for Millman from that point. De Minaur improves to 4-0 in career meetings against his experienced compatriot (and without dropping a set), and will have his eyes set on a place in the Round of 16 at Indian Wells for the second straight year. Can he avoid the upset against Alexander Zverev’s conqueror Tommy Paul?

Tommy Paul scored the biggest win of his fledgling career with a mammoth three-set win over Germany’s Alexander Zverev. Having taken the first set in domineering fashion, giving away just two games, Paul was pegged back by an improved Zverev in the second set. And when he trailed 2-4 in the third set, it seemed all the good work that Paul put together throughout the afternoon might vanish into the thin Californian air. But there was an unlikely twist to the tale as Zverev produced two double faults in that seventh game to give Paul the break back. The two players then held serve continuously to force a tiebreak, where an ultra-aggressive Paul dominated it from start to finish.

Alex De Minaur and Tommy Paul have not played each other on the ATP Tour. Tuesday’s match at Indian Wells will be their first official meeting. Paul enters this match as the slight underdog, but will relish that tag following his big win over Zverev in the previous round. The two takeaways from that Zverev match was how aggressive Paul was from the baseline and taking every necessary step to finish off points at the net when he had the chance to. De Minaur has to avoid that Paul forehand at all costs because it is deadly. The Australian will need to keep Paul on the run for the whole afternoon to get a result. But with confidence at an all-time high, it makes sense to back the American to advance.
