Not many people called it, but Botic van de Zandschulp and Miomir Kecmanovic both tore the pre-tournament scripts to reach the third round of Indian Wells in unlikely circumstances. So will grab the opportunity to reach the Round of 16?
Botic van de Zandschulp is no stranger to beating Top 10 players. For the second time in his career, the Dutchman posted another major win against the ATP’s elite, beating World No. 9 Felix Auger-Aliassime in the second round of Indian Wells in over three hours. Van de Zandschulp had let slip three match points at 6-5 in the second set, but composed himself after losing the tiebreak and ultimately came through the decider. The 26-year-old cracked the world’s top 50 for the first time a few days ago and he seems to enjoy playing on US soil. Can he extend his good record on these shores when he takes on Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanovic?
Miomir Kecmanovic, meanwhile, made it through to the third round of Indian Wells with a comeback win over Croatia’s number 24 seed Marin Cilic. Kecmanovic had one foot out of the tournament when he trailed 6-4 in the final set tiebreak, but a couple of crucial misses by Cilic gave the Serbian hope. And Kecmanovic reeled off four successive points to turn the tiebreak on its head.
Botic van de Zandschulp and Miomir Kecmanovic have not played each other on the ATP Tour. Tuesday’s match at Indian Wells will be their first official meeting. This is massive opportunity for both players to go deep now that they have each taken out a high-seeded player. The onus is certainly on the Dutchman to go on and keep up his recent hot streak on the US soil after his mesmeric run at Flushing Meadows last year. Kecmanovic is no slouch and should compete bravely, but I can’t see past van de Zandschulp in this one.
