TennisSection previews the 2021 Sofia Open as John Millman (8) will face Marcos Giron in the Quarter-Finals on Friday October 1st, 2021.
An interesting and rather surprising Quarter-Final is upon us here at the 2021 Sofia Open as the eighth seeded Aussie will face Marcos Giron of the USA. Both men entered this event in relatively good form and have a great chance of reaching their first Semi-Final of the season. Giron has been on a bit of a giant-killing run over the past few weeks and will be looking to defeat yet another seed here in Sofia, while John Millman has slowly been turning his poor season around. This is poised to be very evenly matched, who will get the win and advance to the Semi-Finals?
John Millman is the eighth seed here at the 2021 Sofia Open and is currently ranked #55 on the ATP Tour. The Australian has a reputation of being one of the toughest competitors on the circuit and relies heavily on his mental strength, consistency and movement. After a disastrous start to his season, he has had some strong results recently, making back to back Quarter-Finals here and at the Astana Open last week. After impressively dismissing Mikael Ymer in the First Round he was made to work by Ilya Marchenko, a veteran Qualifier. While Millman did not play well, he will be delighted to have grinded out a tough victory and that could only serve to build his confidence even further. His toughest test yet comes in the form of the American Marcos Giron, who has been in impressive form recently. The Aussie should be considered the favorite due to his extensive experience and higher ranking, but this match is pretty even in my opinion and he is in for a battle.
Marcos Giron is ranked #67 in the world and is unseeded here at the 2021 Sofia Open. After a strong showing last week in Metz at the Moselle Open where he reached the Quarter-Finals, the American has repeated the feat here in Sofia with his second consecutive win over third seeded Alex de Minaur. While it is true that the Australian is in poor form he is still one of the best players in the world so to beat him twice is an impressive feat. Giron has been going from strength to strength and is looking increasingly confident on this surface, and will be very difficult to beat here. His opponent John Millman is highly experienced and will make it a tough battle, but the American will be liking his chances here.
This will be the first meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, but they played once before in a Challenger in 2015, with Marcos Giron getting the win. I am expecting a very close match here, with both players having similar game styles. The points will likely be very grueling, and it really is hard to separate the two. However, Giron seems to be in better form at the moment, and his confidence is the highest it has ever been. His momentum is likely to be the difference here as he seems unstoppable at the moment, grinding through win after win. John Millman is a fighter and will keep it close, but I see Giron getting a three set win here and advancing to his first ATP Semi-Final of the year.
